Matthew's link to Isaiah 53:4

In Matthew 8:1–17, Matthew lists the cleansing of the leper, the healing of the centurion’s servant, and then the healing of Peter’s mother-in-law. He then concludes, quoting Isaiah 53:4, that these healings fulfilled what Isaiah had spoken.

The miracles performed by Jesus during His earthly ministry all signalled that Jesus was the Messiah. And in this light, the Jewish people, having read Isaiah 53 and then seeing Jesus on the cross, should have been able to recognise Him as the Messiah. All of these miracles had taken place, and now here He is, being bruised and wounded on a cross.

The very healing and deliverance they had witnessed in His ministry were pointing towards the One Isaiah had said would bear our griefs and carry our sorrows. And then, when they saw Him being bruised and afflicted on the cross, they should have been able to understand what was actually taking place. Yet many of them were still blinded.
